Grayscale Investments, the world’s leading crypto asset management firm, announced today that Peter Mintzberg will take over as Chief Executive Officer starting August 15, 2024. Mintzberg will also join the Grayscale Board of Directors at that time, succeeding Michael Sonnenshein, who is stepping down to explore new opportunities. In the interim, Chief Financial Officer Edward McGee will serve as the principal executive officer, overseeing the firm’s operations.
Peter Mintzberg brings over two decades of experience from some of the world’s top asset management firms. His tenure includes significant roles such as the Global Head of Strategy for Asset and Wealth Management at Goldman Sachs, and leadership positions at BlackRock, OppenheimerFunds, and Invesco. “Peter is an exceptional strategic leader with extensive global expertise, making him the ideal choice to guide Grayscale through its next growth phase,” stated Barry Silbert, Founder and CEO of DCG.
Mintzberg expressed his enthusiasm about his new role, noting, “I am honored to join Grayscale at such a pivotal time in its history, as the firm continues to leverage the momentum within the crypto asset class.”
Barry Silbert also took the opportunity to commend Michael Sonnenshein for his significant contributions to Grayscale. Since joining the company in 2014 and becoming CEO in 2021, Sonnenshein has successfully managed the growth of Grayscale’s assets under management from $60 million to approximately $30 billion. Under his leadership, Grayscale achieved a historic court victory against the SEC, allowing it to list the first spot Bitcoin ETF on the NYSE Arca.
Michael Sonnenshein reflected on his time at Grayscale, stating, “It has been a privilege to lead Grayscale and work alongside such a talented team. With the crypto asset class at a crucial juncture, now is the right time for a smooth leadership transition.”
Peter Mintzberg is noted for his strategic acumen and his ability to innovate and drive growth. He started his career at McKinsey & Co., working in their New York, San Francisco, and São Paulo offices, focusing on financial services and technology sectors. He has been recognized for his leadership in finance, including being named a Latino leader by The Alumni Society and a David Rockefeller Fellow by the Partnership for New York City.
Grayscale continues to innovate in the cryptocurrency space, having launched a suite of nineteen crypto investment products over the last decade. These products provide access to the crypto market in secure, transparent formats, helping to educate investors and work with regulators to integrate crypto assets more fully into the financial landscape.
